EDITION CDs |
__ Amsterdam (4 CD set) $55 ABACD701
Winner
of the 1998 Booker Prize.
From
the Independent review: "Ian McEwan's Booker Prize-winning
novella "Amsterdam" takes to spoken word like a duck
to water, not least because it is so short that no abridgement
was needed to fit it on to four cassette tapes. Alan Bates, his
voice gruffly wry and authoritative, is the perfect choice as
reader. |
__ Art (CD) $25
ABACD403
Alan
plays Serge, the guy who sets everything in motion by buying
a white painting. What follows is a great and hilarious meditation
on friendship, taste, style, and ... art.
This
Yasmina Reza play had a succession of distinguished casts in
London and New York, but none more wonderful than this trio:
Alan Bates - Michael Gambon - Simon Russell Beale. |
__
Babii Yar and Other Poems (CD) $25
ABACD401
This
wonderful recording features Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko
performing his works in live poetry readings, and Alan Bates
reading the same poems in English in a studio. Great performances
by Yevtushenko declaiming in epic style, Bates using the full
range of his instrument to reveal every nuance. It's worth searching
for this gem.
This
CD is arranged with the English reading of each poem first, followed
by the Russian, so that you can follow Yevtushenko's version.
(Note that the Bates reading also appears on the Poetry Compilation
CD.) |
__
Poetry Compilation (CD)
$25 ABACD402
This
CD contains works by nine poets: Blake, Browning, Celan, Frost,
Henley, Housman, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and Yevtushenko. There
are 39 poems; the length of the CD is 70 minutes.
One
of the highlights is Alan's contribution to a PEN International
fundraiser in 1981 to benefit PEN's work on behalf of writers
whose freedom had been denied them. He reads the searing Paul
Celan poem "Death Fugue." Notes and a playlist accompany
the CD. |
__
The Collection (CD)
$25 ABACD404
In
the 1976 video of Pinter's "The Collection" Alan plays
James, a jealous husband.
In
1962 Alan played a different role in this BBC radio production
- he is Bill, Harry's young live-in lover. Harry (Olivier in
the video) is played by Harold Pinter, and Stella by Vivien
Merchant, Pinter's wife at that time. This was taped off
the air; the sound quality is excellent, and there are interesting
differences between this version and the video. |
__ Thomas Hardy Readings (CD)
$25 ABACD501
Alan reads
excerpts from The Mayor of Casterbridge, The Trumpet Major,
Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Life's Little Ironies,
as well as a selection of poems.
The programme is interspersed with music
researched from the Hardy family manuscripts and the Dorset County
Museum, played by the Mellstock Band on early instruments. Recorded
for the National Trust on 9 January 1998. |
* There
are two basic formats for recordable DVDs: DVD-R (that's
minus R) and DVD+R. DVD-R
has emerged as the most universal and popular format.
If you want to check your player for
compatibility, the link below lists over 5,000 players and the

PLEASE NOTE: Unless
otherwise requested, all BA disks are DVD-R. If you would prefer
DVD+R, just ask. In all cases, the DVDs are Region 1, NTSC. All
recent US players and televisions, and most non-US, can play
these disks.
