Richard III

In the spring of 1967, Alan travelled to Canada where he was in residence with the Stratford Canada Shakespeare Festival for its fifteenth season. There he performed in two plays: the title role in "Richard III," directed by John Hirsch, designed by Desmond Heeley, with music by Stanley Silverman. (he also played Mr Ford in "The Merry Wives of Windsor," directed by David William.)
Here's a link to a long interview from that summer, in a Canadian women's magazine called Chatelaine. It's an interesting artifact: it captures the period in a way that more polished writing does not. And it's a rare glimpse of the Mod Bates.

There are no reviews of the Stratford productions in the Archive, but several summers ago Alan was back in Stratford to tape a CBC interview for an major documentary television series called "Stratford Gold," celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Festival.

a portion of the interview:

If you ever have a chance to see the Stratford Gold series, you'll enjoy the tales of these long ago productions. In this episode, which covers the late '60s, there's a wonderful anecdote about the Christopher Plummer/Zoe Caldwell "Anthony and Cleopatra," the steamiest interpretation ever presented there -- even the other actors were amazed. Ah, the 60's! |||
